III. How to install manhole covers

How to install manhole covers/drain covers correctly

Below is a video guide on how to install manhole covers compiled and edited by Hoa Binh. This video will visually guide the installation process with images.

Explanation of manhole cover installation steps

Step 1. Measure and determine the cover height and reserve depth before proceeding with manhole cover installation

Before installation, you need to measure the height of the manhole cover frame. Determine the reserve depth to ensure that the manhole cover is flush with the road surface when installation is complete.

Step 2. Clean and level the base for the frame, then apply mortar

Apply mortar or sealed concrete onto the contact area of the manhole cover frame and the concrete collar. The thickness should be < 4 cm.

If the base is brick, it should be moistened beforehand with water to increase adhesion.

Step 3: Place the manhole cover frame onto the concrete collar and adjust to be level with the road surface

Place the manhole cover frame onto the grouted concrete collar section. Adjust so that the frame is level with the road surface. Use a wooden mallet to press down on the frame to ensure the mortar spreads evenly and seals the frame.

Depending on the road's incline, use wedges, hooks, or another system to maintain the stability of the manhole cover frame during the subsequent installation phase. Clean up the spilled concrete on the inner edge.

Step 4: Reinforce rebar and concrete in the gap between the manhole cover frame and the manhole opening

Further reinforce bent steel stakes into the prepared holes of the manhole cover frame. Consideration can be given to adding round steel frame reinforcement.

The round steel reinforcement not only helps to fix the frame but also helps create a durable, rigid, load-bearing reinforced concrete structure. This helps limit cracking, breakage, and surface subsidence when put into use.

Afterward, pour concrete into the gap between the frame and the manhole opening. Level the concrete. Remember to only pour halfway up the frame. Leave about 2-5 cm from the road surface for asphalt.

Step 5: Lay asphalt and compact for leveling

After completing the concrete pouring, wait for the concrete to dry. Then, lay asphalt to seal around the edges. Then use a compactor to tightly press the asphalt down. Compact until the surface is flush with the road surface.

In this step, it is important to note that concrete or asphalt must not stick to the gaps of the manhole cover or directly cover a portion of the manhole cover. The consequence is that the drain cover cannot be lifted afterward. It will be very difficult to open the manhole cover when cleaning the sewer.

Conclusion on correct manhole cover installation

Thus, with a relatively simple process, you have completed the replacement and installation of the manhole cover. Although not overly complicated, you need to be extremely careful during construction. Avoid injury when operating.
